My soul doth magnify the Lord.
Non serviam is the most popular religion in the world. It does not call itself that.
He hath regarded the humility of His handmaid.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble.
Love the table. Love the shop. Love the parish that still knows your name.

A letter
My fellow citizens.
Lincoln at dusk. The water. The flags. The words are this house’s.
My fellow citizens:
I do not come tonight to ask you to hate the world. I come to ask you not to kneel to it.
If everything is fine, then Calvary was theater. We know it was not theater. A man died on a hill, and the hill is still there.
Your children are being taught. That is not in dispute. The only question worthy of a free people is this: by whom?
We have been told that dignity is standing like a customer. I do not believe that. Dignity is knowing you are made in the image of God — and then falling to your knees because He is God, and you are not.
Begin there. One decade of the Rosary. Not a performance. Ten beads, said. Then the Brown Scapular — the old cloth on the skin, a quiet yes that does not need a camera.
This land is not a church. The flag is not a god. Both are owed what is theirs.
I think of the mill-town parish that outlasted the mill. I think of the immigrant who knelt before he could speak the language. I think of the man who still has a table, a wife, a shop, and a name the parish knows.
My soul doth magnify the Lord. That is not a slogan. It is the oldest politics there is.
We do not need a new religion of I will not serve. That religion is already the most popular in the world. It simply does not call itself that.
Prefer the family shop. Pay the man who works. Make peace in the house. Pray the beads. Wear the cloth. Then stand up, and build.
God willing, we shall.

The flag is not a god. The country is not a church. Both are owed what is theirs. The same Sunday. Different radios.
For the ones who came home and the ones who did not. For the mill town parish that outlasted the mill. For the immigrant who knelt before he could speak the language. A man still has a table, a wife, a shop, a parish — in every decade of the last hundred years.

The rail. The Host. The stone that is still standing. Pictures return when the folder can carry them — we will not ship empty frames.

The names we keep
Not a modern shortlist. The names the house holds.
Mother Mary. Saint Michael the Archangel. Saint Joseph.
Saint Stephen. Saint Augustine. Saint John Chrysostom. Saint Athanasius. Saint Anthony.
Saint Agobard. Saint Thomas Aquinas. Saint Vincent Ferrer. Saint Maximilian Kolbe. Saint Philomena. Saint Martin de Porres.
And all the martyrs of the Faith.
The house
Husband. Wife. God.
A perfect marriage is not two people performing. Kids feel coldness. Let them feel love.
Eat at the same table. Bless the food. Put the phones down. A child who is sung to will remember it when the world is loud.
Prefer the family shop. Pay the man who actually works. Learn the name of the woman at the counter.
Sunday is not a brand. It is a roast, a walk, a nap, Mass, and the same people again next week.
